Mental Omega News Bulletin #19

The Mental OmegaAct One playthrough is over and it's finally time to post some news. While the recording of all 36 missions gave me a chance to once more test and adjust all the Act One missions, I'm glad it is done as now I can fully focus on finishing the Act Two campaign and the design of Side 4 which we announced a few months ago in this trailer.

The introduction of a fourth side will obviously result in the increase of total subfactions available in the mod from 9 to 12 as we have been designing this new side with the intention to give it 3 unique subfactions from the beginning. If you are following Mental Omega on Facebook or ModDB then you already know their names: from left to right, it is Haihead, Wings of Coronia and the Last Bastion.

The skirmish loading screens for these subfactions have all been created by Nooze.

The Mental Omega installer, with its classic "Red Alert 2 Setup.exe look" will be updated to feature several of Side 4's objects on the new so-called blueprints. So far, we've got three, which present the Teratorn Skyguard, the Mastodon and the Plasmerizer. The models have been created by Moder.U, Lobstrex and Bu7loos, while the artwork is the result of combined efforts by Tomsons and Nooze.

On a side note, due to the introduction of this new side we are reworking the Stolen Tech system. There will not be a set of 4x4 stolen tech infantry units. Instead, there will be a set of 4x4 stolen tech vehicles, while what used to be the stolen tech in the current release will be repurposed or scrapped. We will go into more details on this matter later, however here's one of the new stolen tech vehicles, created by Azri_Apoc: the Soviet Grumble - the ultimate anti-aircraft system which requires to be deployed before firing its powerful rockets at great ranges.

Stay tuned as we update our website with more news about the upcoming Side 4.

DTA mission playthrough videos

It sort of became a tradition for DTA trailer videos to be posted annually, but this year we decided to do something different and instead made a few gameplay videos of the staff playing various missions on the Hard difficulty level.

The first video is of Rampastring playing the Frostbite singleplayer mission (like the majority of the other missions, this mission was also made by Rampastring).

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

While all videos that were recorded after this are only of Co-Op missions, it's possible that more gameplay videos of singleplayer missions will be recorded at some point in the future.

Since Co-Op missions are still unique to DTA among all C&C games and C&C mods, we've primarily been focusing on those lately.

Chrono Hazard (made by Sombracier) is the first Co-Op mission we recorded, with me (Bittah Commander) and Rampastring as the players. The video is shown from my perspective, but since I'm playing with a resolution of 1920x1080, you're also able to see what Rampastring's units are doing most of the time.
The downside of that is of course that the video can't be viewed with lower resolutions, which is why we tried something different for the next video.

Freezing Offensive is the Co-Op mission for which we recorded the next video, with me and Rampastring as the players again. This time around we decided that the game should be recorded with a lower resolution so that the video would still be watchable for people who can't handle the full HD resolution (1920x1080). We ended up using a resolution of 1600x900 and the downside with that is of course that only the units of the player that's recording would then be visible throughout most of the video, which slightly defeats the point of recording Co-Op missions in the first place.
So to get around that, both of us recorded the game and I then heavily edited the videos to create a "dynamic" split-screen video (and with dynamic I mean that the sizes of the players' respective screens change depending on where the most action is going on).

We might make more videos like this in the future depending on how it's received, so please leave a comment and let us know if you liked watching it like this, found it too confusing or whatever else you experienced.

And the final one is the promised fresh-out-of-the-oven video of Double Team, with the usual players.

This video was recorded by me again, at a resolution of 1280x720 and because of the nature of this mission it worked out perfectly fine without requiring any fancy edits.
Like all other missions we recorded, it was played on hard and it took a good number of attempts to win it. It probably looks a lot easier than it actually is in the video, but you might be able to notice that I almost died a good number of times.

One thing to mention is that all of these videos were recorded before the Multiplayer Saves feature was implemented, so keep in mind that you now do have this option if you ever get stuck on one of the Co-Op missions.

On a different matter, a new update for DTA has just been released. Recently we noticed that the SAGE Fans server went down, so if you can't update via the client, go to Options, click the "Updater" tab and make sure that "SAGE Fans (North America)" is not at the top of the server priority list.
Also, we received several reports about people getting false-positive virus reports of DTA.exe from their virus scanners. This should no longer happen for most of the virus scanners that had this problem.

Mental Omega hits the 3rd "Best Overall" choice of ModDB!

Another ModDB Mod of the Year popularity contest is over and today they've revealed the Editor's Choice. Our friends over Mental Omega scored the 3rd place at the category Best Overall.

Mental Omega: Almost Perfect Yuri's Revenge is a free unofficial expansion pack for Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge (from Westwood Studios), which retells and continues the storyline of the original game. Enhanced with Ares DLL, Mental Omega 3.0 strives to bring new features to Red Alert 2 Yuri’s Revenge.

"The perfect mod for any red alert fan, packed with features and rich arching story line, this expansion sized conversion is well worth your time and attention."

And it is well deserved, considering all the effort that has been placed into this mod.

I have a feeling that Yuri's Propaganda Message worked like a charm. It just needs to be slightly tuned in the next editions to get the first place. Take a look at it and obey him when the next Mod of the Year happens.

And of course, congrats for all other mods that were mentioned there as well.

We are proud to announce the Christmas 2015 release of OpenRA!

Quote:
I've got a present for ya!

— Commando

40 developer elves have toiled long and hard to fill your stocking with lots of fixes, improvements and long-awaited features.

In particular, this release introduces the global chat channel that is shared across all mods, which will allow you to meet up with other waiting players and arrange matches without joining servers. Going along with it is a re-design of the ingame server browser as well as the skirmish lobby.

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

The channel is available from outside the game as well,
by connecting to irc.openra.net:6667 channel #lobby using your favourite IRC client.

Also new in this release is a game speed selector, a feature that many people have often and repeatedly asked for over the years, and now it’s finally here, for multiplayer, single-player skirmish and missions!

In addition, OpenRA now offers an additional way of scrolling the map similar to the way it worked in the original Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2 (by right-clicking and moving the mouse). To use it, select the “Joystick” scrolling option in the input settings dialog.

A change we are sure many will rejoice to hear is that units will now start with the “Defend” stance by default. No more losing units that decided to hunt after enemies without your explicit orders!

Another big focus of this release has been overhauling our Dune 2000 mod. We have added Thumpers, spice blows, and rebalanced all unit and building statistics to more closely match the original game.

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

The Red Alert mod has received some much-needed balance changes, with a focus on making the country-specific units more interesting and useful. The changes are too numerous to list them all here, have a look at the changelog for all the details. There are also a total of five new missions for the Soviet single-player campaign, which means that it is the first of our campaigns to be 50% complete!

The Tiberian Dawn mod also includes two new single-player missions, as well as some minor balance changes and several new multi-player maps.

As usual, we not only have treats for our players, but for modders as well. The map editor has seen further improvements, such as a cash counter and a copy and paste function. There are also new traits for weather and lighting effects, more flexible Missile and DeployToUpgrade logic, as well as new additions to the Lua API. As usual, use the OpenRA.Utility to upgrade your mods or maps to this new release. Be warned, however, that there are couple of changes this time around where it unfortunately wasn’t possible to offer an automated upgrade path. Most of these are mentioned in the changelog, the OpenRA.Utility will alert you to the remaining ones when it runs.

There are a lot more minor changes and bugfixes, so take a look at the full changelog if you want to unwrap all of the details.

Grab the installer now for your operating system from our download page!

We hope you’ll enjoy this newest installment of OpenRA! Have fun!

Frontline Chaos - December 2015 Update

In a bit later then expected update, I will showcase the updated Revenant vehicle textures, the new Raden and the completely new Creeper.

After previous Frontline Chaos update I received feedback about two things that several people found lacking. The first of those was the lack of details of the textures. It basicly boiled down that they looked like brown blobs with a small exclusion here and there. After annoying several other modders / modellers I received several improvement points. To make a long story short: I spend the months between previous update and now updating every Revenant vehicle texture. Not non-stop of course, but figuring out what looks good, applying this to the various damage states' textures and doing this for all vehicles is time-consuming. I also took the moment to fix some small things I overlooked, like incorrect UWV mappings and other texture errors. The end result is shown here:

The second thing people mentioned is that the Raden model looked a bit too much like a certain WW2 tank. After some ideas, this is the new Raden:

Clik here to view.

Compare to the old model: Old Raden

Last but not least, when I wrote previous update, I mentioned I had finished all Revenant models. However, I forgot the smallest Revenant vehicle, the Creeper:

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

A Creeper is a guided bomb on tracks, with only one purpose: demolition duty. The 100kg HE charge is large enough to deal significant damage to fortifications, cripple vehicles, and outright obliterate infantry. The chassis itself is no taller then halfway a man's knee-height. Overall, the Creeper is small enough to be transportable in Cobras, Pandoras or other transportation vehicles.

Creepers are guided by remote control, while their operators stay behind the frontlines. While not as advanced as the robotics used by their Legion counterparts, they can function just as well, and are overall much easier and cheaper to maintain.

This concludes this update. Enjoy your Christmas / holidays, and have a good new year. Dutchygamer signing off.

ModDB Mod of the Year 2015: Player Choices

Hello everyone. A couple of days ago, ModDB revealed the results of their popularity contest of the year with the upcoming mods and released mods.

It has surprised me to see how popular RTS mods became on both cases. In the upcoming mods, the winner is the Total War: Rise of Mordor, a Total War: Attila modification. In the released mods contest, the top 3 mods come from EA Los Angeles/EA Pacific/Westwood Studios game engines. They are, respectively, Edain Mod, Rise of the Reds and Mental Omega.

1st Place: Edain Mod

2nd Place: Rise of the Reds

3rd Place: Mental Omega

From the mods hosted here, Tiberium Essence has received a honorable mention under the released mods player choices.

Congratulations for all chosen mods and there will be more in the end of this year.

Ares 0.A released

A new year has come, and it starts with the release of Ares 0.A, the latest version of the expansion dll for Yuri's Revenge!

Last year had only a single release, the ill-fated Ares 0.9. It was not bad in itself, just the experience I had with it was not as good as it should have been in my opinion. Anyhow, for this release cycle I was very much pleased with all the testing that happened in the last few months. Thank You all who participated to make this possible!

I'm sure you know what Ares 0.A has to offer (if not, the announcement at LaunchPad is a start), so I concentrate on the non-obvious internal bits: Ares 0.A is the most efficient release yet, with many improvements to older features and several changes to the internal structure. This means, Ares is more compact, and has a lower memory footprint than the last versions. All these optimizations sum up so Ares 0.A has an observable positive effect on game speed (compared to the previous versions).

All in all an inconspicuous release, but under the covers it's a piece of software i'm quite proud of.

Happy New Year, and also Happy Modding!

Happy 2016, from PPM!

Hey everyone! As usual, this is the time of the year where we wish you a happy new year, although we always want your whole life to be happy, healthy and may your dreams come true, except if they are related to the destruction of this humble site. And it's also one of these times of the year where I post everything we've accomplished in the year and our list of objectives for the next year... that will never be accomplished, although some exceptions may get eventually done.... by some random accident, of course.

Anyway, if you have any doubts, I've done that in 2015, 2014 and 2013. It was a way to compensate 2012, 2011 and 2010, which we did not have any new feature for the site/forums, unlike in 2009, 2008, 2007 and 2006.

Anyway, among the things that happened here in 2015, we have:

- PPM Forums has gained a new domain (ppmforums.com) and the evil errors 503 that were haunting us were wiped from the face of the internet. I won't ask you if you remember them because I've already ask it at this birthday topic. Besides that, we've complemented the forums with a couple of administrative features and several fixes for some random problems.

- The following mods were released: Twisted Insurrection 0.45, The Dawn of the Tiberium Age 1.1468, EASB Hour 1.000, TDX Public Beta 1 and CnC D2k 2.83.

- Voxel Section Editor III has got two new features (Rotate Model and 2D View Background Colors) and tons of bug fixes. OS SHP Builder has got a couple of bug fixes and no longer requires admin priviledges to run (unless you are installing it). OS BIG Editor may read most .meg files from GreyGoo. There is an incomplete OS HVA Builder 2.2 without the source being disclosed that revamped the interface, fixed several bugs and adds some interesting features such as Custom Palettes, Grid, Section Center, etc.  TS & RA2 Tunnel Drawer has received some bug fixes. An unoficial update for the XCC TMP Editor was made by tomsons26lv that allows the creation of terrains with different tile sizes, for OpenRA. Shapeset was created to convert PCX files to SHPs used by Command & Conquer 95, Red Alert 1 and Sole Survivor. TS Wave Maker was created to aid modders to code AI for Tiberian Sun.

- Ares 0.9 was released last year, although few hours ago, Ares 0.A has been released. This new version has a better performance and many new features such as Troop Crawler logic known from Generals, Saboteurs and Crush Damage from Dune 2000, buildings degrading while a player is low on power, Stealth Tanks holding fire unless in area guard mode, and several more. Some more enhancements on the Firestorm Walls,  focus on passengers, like transports accepting only certain infantry units to enter and more.

If we take into account our 2015 plans, we've only managed to improve the site stability, by fixing the error 503s. So, this is why copy and paste was once again used in our 2016 plans:

-> Expand the site to become more popular with games beyond Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2 scope: We are slowly adding content for other games here, but we are not getting many modders interested to discuss them in our community yet. We'll try to change this situation by adding more content and trying to approach communities from other games.

-> Progress with VXLSE III's 3D model export feature: This is our ultimate goal to become a significant community that modifies or develops 3D games. We have many voxel assets that would be very useful in newer games if we are able to convert them.

-> Attract more high quality mods: We need fresh blood and attractive content in this place. PPM is still an attractive place to have forums to advertise your projects and it still holds a community with skilled modders and artists to improve the quality of your project in the long term.

-> Improve news coverage from other games and communites: Nowadays, we are covering news related to RTS Command & Conquer games and OpenRA, while we want this place to become a modding reference for every game. Although we have channels where everyone may post a news, such as our Community News Forum, we shouldn't have to rely only on our community. We need to change our strategy on this matter. We'll soon start a service where you may have forums to discuss news from your mod (imported from RSS feeds).

-> Improve methods to organize our content: The News Tracker is a nice way to organize the news that happens in this place, but there are other ways to organize the content that we may explore. We are still researching how to implement the hashtag idea.

-> Revamp the mobile site: We'll change the menu text using one of these android looking buttons to help you to navigate the mobile site.

-> A new PPM Network Bar: We may eventually drop Revora's network bar and build our own, focusing on what do we have to offer here.

And that's it. Happy new year and I hope you enjoy PPM in the future.

PPM offers Unofficial News Forums for your mod!

Hello everyone! As I've mentioned in the Happy 2016, from PPM! news post, we are looking to improve our community news coverage. And, in order to do that, we are offering a new service here:

The Unnoficial News Forum Hosting

-> What is it?

This is a service offered for mods that stands as a subforum that imports content from RSS feeds. Basically, PPM News Reporter will import your news posts twice a day, allowing members of this forum to discuss them here and your mod releases to be quickly promoted to through our frontpage and news tracker.

-> How does it work?

We will create a new category in our forums between Pre-Alpha Projects and Inactive Projects that will be called Community Projects. This category will have one subforum for each mod covered with the authorization of the mod leader. Twice a day, our server will fetch information from the RSS feeds related to each mod, adapting their content as new topics in the forums. It works in a similar way as seen at VXLSE III's SVN News Feeds. The mod leader will be able to moderate the forums, post news of his(her) own if (s)he desires to do so and edit the posts from the news bot. Forum members will be able to post replies and discuss the news, but they won't post new topics there.

-> What are the requirements?

Your mod needs to have at least one RSS feed and it needs to be approved by me. ModDB offers a couple of RSS feeds by default. Revora may export forum contents as RSS if you request the administrators there. Most new IPB forums may export RSS feeds, etc...

-> Why is it good for mods?

It catches a new public in a quite quick way with little to no effort at all (since the news posts will be here automatically). Posts with mod releases might be promoted to our frontpage. Our news tracker will also catch news about your mod. It will also be good to make PPM more active.

-> Is it open to every project?

Technically yes, although we will start slow. Converting RSS feeds for phpBB's BB code and bringing external news into PPM forums requires some adaptation and constant attention. We'll have a RSS feed in our end that will convert your RSS feed into something that will be appropriate to this place. So, that requires some effort from my end (not yours). This is why we are starting slowly, being tempted to priorize projects that are more popular in first place.

- How do I get an unofficial news forum for my project?

Post a reply in this news post asking for an unofficial news forum for your project and we'll discuss everything else with private messages.

CnCD2K 2.8.5 has been released!

CnCD2K 2.8.5 has been released! Despite the D2K in the name, you won't find much of Dune universe in this game. It actually extends Yuri's Revenge with new factions such as GLA and The Order of the Pets, with an arsenal of some really angry animals at your disposal.

This new version brings a new campaign mission, fake buildings and a couple of extra things. Here's the official change log, when compared to 2.8.4:

Quote:
Added CotP Mission 5 - Operation Airstrike.
Added Fake War Factory, Fake Battle Lab, Fake Gap Gen/Propaganda Tower/Psychic Tower and Fake MCVs for all gamemodes.
Added also Fake Shipyards and Fake Radars as RA1 Gamemode only.
Added Allied, Soviet and Yuri Gates for both directions.
Added Loadscreen for CotP Missions too.
Updated Ares.dll to lastest unstable build of 0.B.
Added FAKE text for Fake Buildings also added ability to spy them to find out they are fake or not.
Incrased Technicans' Damage and Range.
Added ability to spy silos (all mods) and refineries (only ra1 mod, in others still steals money) to see enemy money.
Fixed CY V-12 is not trainable.
Fixed Furry can't Self Heal.
Fixed spy units in Unholy Alliance Gamemode, but broken them in Hero War.

DTA - January updates!

We've jump-started the new year this month with 3 updates for DTA. We've included new features, gameplay fixes, additional maps and new toys for mappers.

Over the last 2 years we've got multiple requests for LAN multiplayer support. Thanks to CnCNet's great performance I didn't consider it important enough, but a group of donators managed to convince me otherwise and so, this often-requested feature has now been implemented. Since it was implemented only recently and it's difficult to test LAN alone, it works but is still in a somewhat beta state. So, if you spot any bugs, be sure to report them so I'll be able to fix them!

Our client's looks have also got an overhaul in the latest update, in all themes. We've ditched the standard Windows borders to make room for our own, in all windows except for the game lobby. The default theme only has a 1-pixel silver border in all windows, but the change is more significant in the Classic theme and the Soviet and Allied themes. You can enable these themes in the game options menu.

If you've played DTA, you might've got annoyed by a certain bug. Units that automatically fired at enemies went to chase after those enemies when the enemies got out of the units' firing range. It was common to see your artillery heading into the enemy base because of this bug, even when you didn't order them to do so. This bug has been plaguing the TS engine for 16 years, but thanks to AlexB, it is now fixed. You can now rely on your long-range units staying where you ordered them to stay.

AlexB also fixed another bug of less importance, namely that if you capture all sides' production facilities on a naval map, DTA would crash. This is because the game engine cannot handle more than 75 icons on the sidebar, and would crash when the limit was exceeded. Now, instead of crashing, the game simply won't show more than 75 icons. This means that you can now safely have control of all 4 factions' technology on naval maps.

I mentioned new toys for mappers. These are paved roads, pavement additions, new trains, a huge crater and more ice floes. Of these, the most significant are the pavement additions and new paved roads; as you can see above, they allow us to create much better looking cities.

And there can't be a chain of DTA updates without new maps, right? During this month we've added one new Co-Op mission (Ally Under Siege) and one new standard multiplayer map (Coastal Path Revisited).

Aside from that, we've improved the smoothness of the CnCNet lobby and fixed half a dozen issues in maps, some of them more serious than others. You can view the full change log of our updates (the latest 3 and everything before them) on our change log page.
You can download the latest version from our download page if you don't already have DTA installed; if you do have it installed, the client will automatically download and install the latest update for you.

We hope these updates will give you lots of fun when you command and conquer the battlefield this year. See you there!

OpenRA's progress with the Red Alert 2 mod

The OpenRA developpers have been working hard to bring the Red Alert 2 universe to the OpenRA game engine. They've recently shared a couple of videos that shows its progress. Although there are a lot of unfinished features (i.e.: Chrono Miner isn't chrono yet), they already have something playable. In the long soviet gameplay video below the player had to cheat to survive. Check out both videos:

It's been over a year since Graion Dilach and I last were in a stream together, showcasing his mod for Yuri's Revenge, called Attacque Sup?rior.
A lot has happened since, most notably the move from Ares and the YR engine to the OpenRA engine.

This upcoming Saturday, February 13th 2016 at 19:00 GMT Graion Dilach will once again join me on my channel on twitch as we will be showcasing the first playable test version of Attacque Sup?rior.
We will discuss the changes as well as see if the Fan Favorite match will end as it usually does.

I present a nice countdown
And I hope to see you all then!
